Apple Cider

Chris has a new project: brewing hard apple cider! First she got the pressed cider from a local organic orchard, and other materials from a homebrew store in Portland...
...then she did some chemistry experiments and fancy siphoning in the kitchen....

...then she put the cider in the basement to ferment (with special corks that allow air to escape).

Since this is her first time brewing, she has tried several different recipes to see what we like the best. This photo shows the bubbles in two of the 3-gallon batches as they are fermenting.
In case anyone is wondering, it is legal to brew your own alcoholic cider, as long as you follow the rules for maximum quantity and alcohol content. Chris is planning on bottling her cider and bringing it to the big New Year's Eve smelting party! ("Smelting"-to sit in a shack, or shanty, on a river and catch a certain small silver fish, while usually visiting with friends, eating food, and drinking alcoholic beverages.)
Brenda's home project for the last week has been building Chris some shelves in the basement for all the food she canned. It seems like, after four months of living in this house, we are finally starting to get organized!
