After our morning mission we stopped by the local pumpkin patch to pick up some pumpkins. This farm is on our road and only a couple of miles from our house.
They had a few nice pumpkins out front, but we decided to follow the "haunted trail" down to the back pumpkin patch. For preschoolers, there is a fine line between what's fun and what's scary on Halloween. We all hoped there wouldn't be anything really scary or gory on the haunted trail.
Luckily for us, it was mostly pretty tame stuff. The kids liked pointing out the different vampires and witches, and they even liked pressing the various buttons that made scary sounds. The haunted trail was a hit! When we finally reached the pumpkin patch, we found that it had been really picked over. There wasn't much left to choose from. All the same, the girls found their treasures. It's always fun to pick out your very own pumpkin.Mama even found a couple of good ones. There was still no one around when we got back to the entrance, so we paid for our pumpkins by stuffing cash in this box. Only in rural Maine would a farmer use a self-service money box--it's probably because just about every one who stops here is somebody that they know. It's definitely not something that we would have seen back in Seattle! After the pumpkins were loaded up in the car, the girls spied the chicken coop and wanted to say hi to the chickens. The chickens were really beautiful, and there was a big bucket of feed there with instructions to just give them one handful, so we did. When we got home it was time to warm up with--what else? Hot chocolate and gingersnaps...Yum!After all the excitement of pumpkin-picking, we were too worn out to actually carve, so that will be an activity for another day.
