Planting Trees

Today was the day that Chris has been waiting for since last fall--today she finally got to pick up her baby apple and pear trees at Fedco! She has been getting ready for them by digging holes, preparing the soil, and doing lots of research.
There were eight little trees in all, with the six apples going to our yard and the two pears getting planted at the preschool tomorrow.
Emily and Kate were both excited to help Mama with the planting. They are sporting new "summer" haircuts and right now they love to be out in the yard with the wind in their hair. The trees have to be located near each other so they can cross-pollinate. All six of the trees are different varieties of apples, and we expect them to start bearing fruit in about six years. The girls really wanted to help, but they tend to get in the way more than anything. Luckily, both Grandma and Nana were available today to watch the kids so Chris could work. We're so glad to have grandparents close by!Finally all the trees were planted. That was a lot of work! After the trees were done, the girls still didn't want to go inside, so they played on the swingset for awhile.

Now comes the fun part of planting:  Watching the trees (and the kids) grow!
