Neighborhood Snowshoe Walk

We have realized that even though we both try to exercise a lot, we never seem to be able to do it at the same time. Mama goes running or skiing when the kids are at school, and Mom plays basketball or goes snowshoeing at work during lunchtime, but when we're home one of us always has to watch the kids. So today we asked Grandma and Pop Pop to come over and babysit so we could go snowshoeing together.
There is a two mile loop around our neighborhood that we can get to right from our backyard--Mama usually skis it but today the snow was definitely better for snowshoeing. The path goes through some pretty woodland--it leaves the edge of our land quickly and meanders through lots of other folks' property. In Maine there is a long tradition of allowing other people the use of your land for recreating, so unless there are "No Trespassing" signs, we can walk across most private land here.It was a very quiet, peaceful walk, which is just what we were looking for. After leaving the woods, the trail runs along the edge of some farm land.......and then it opens up to Outlet Stream, which drains China Lake. There are some neat old foundation ruins here, as well as this existing bridge.......which carries our own road over Outlet Stream. It was neat to see it from a different perspective today! Then the path follows the banks of the Sebasticook river, which used to be more like a lake before the dam was removed two summers ago.It hasn't been quite cold enough for the river to freeze over yet this year, but it's trying! Finally, the loop turns up from the river and follows this (frozen) creek all the way back up to our road. And that's where we ended up, right back at our house. It was really nice to snowshoe this loop together today. Thanks G&G for the babysitting help!
