Tomato Blight

In the last few days our garden tomatoes have started to look a little bit wilted. Even Kate noticed it....
...then this morning there was an article in our local newspaper about Late Blight, a fungus attacking tomato and potato crops throughout the Northeast: (link to article)
So Chris did some investigating....
....and sure enough, we have Late Blight. Just a couple of days ago these tomato plants looked great, and we were talking about how many quarts and pints Chris would be canning.
Now every plant has to go.
Needless to say, Chris was not a happy gardener. She carefully removed all 21 plants (so as not to spread the fungus any more) and bagged them for the garbage truck. The ideal thing would be to burn them, but it's been too warm lately to get a burn permit, so into the garbage they go.We had hoped to be eating our own tomato sauce all winter, but I guess we'll be buying it at the store after all. On the scale of tragedies this isn't very big, but it's a real disappointment to have all that hard work and investment get thrown away.
